Welcoming Nathanael {A Birth Story} / Fort Wayne Birth Photographer

Few things in life compare to witnessing a child being born. If I could photograph only one thing for the rest of my life, it would be births. I wish birth photography was a ‘thing’ when my son was born and wish so much we would have had his entrance to the world documented. Instead, I get to see lots of other tiny humans make their entrance to this world.

If you’ve been considering having the birth of your child photographed, do it! There are so many little moments throughout the delivery of your baby that I make sure to capture: the moment you hold your son or daughter the first time, the up close photos of tiny little fingers and toes…all those moments that you want to remember forever.

This sweet little nugget of goodness was born last year and I’ve known his mamma since first grade. By the way, how cool is it that I get to be in the delivery room with one of my oldest friends while her son is being born? Answer: pretty darn cool! We arrived at The Birthplace at Dupont Hospital bright and early. Allison knew ahead of time she would be having a C-Section. For those of you wondering, yes, I can be in the operating room during the delivery with the permission of the doctor and each one has their preference. If you know for sure you’ll be having a C-section and it’s important for you to have the birth photographed, I encourage you to talk with you doctor as soon as possible. Most often during the delivery, the main restriction in photographing is we can’t take pictures of the physical cutting of the skin, once the cutting is done, and the baby is being brought out of the uterus, I can click away!

Can you tell they love each other?

Dr. Rumsey was wonderful to work with. He was great about making sure I was able to get the photos while still maintaining the safety of Allison.

Nathanael is a pretty lucky dude because he has two of the best big sisters ever! They were so excited to meet him for the first time.

I count it as one of my life’s greatest blessings when I form relationships with people that are truly genuine and wonderful.  I value each of my clients and the trust they put in me to document their life.  The Waikel family has been one of those families who are just down right amazing, I’ve been able to see their family grow since they were expecting their first baby.  I L-O-V-E these kids!

I tried to find the author of this quote as it’s one of my favoties, but I can’t, whomever came up with it gets high fives:
“Don’t ask them to live in your world, visit theirs instead”

This picture right here is why having family pictures taken are so important. Someday these precious babies are going to be grown up, someday they might not want to play with each other and will sit on opposite sides of the house. But today, this moment, their love for one another was captured, frozen in time to remind them later that God chose them to be brother and sister.

Each family session Mikayla gets a surprise. Sometimes it’s a sucker or a barbie doll but THIS time….it was a beautiful yellow parasol. She wanted so badly to be Mary Poppins so her mamma and daddy got her an umbrella to twirl and sing “Spoonful of Sugar”. Love this parasol and want one for yourself? You can find it here

One thing I always try to do during a family session is get at least a few pictures of mom and dad together. Years from now, the kids will treasure those photos as they remember the laughter that was within their parents’ marriage. Don’t wait for ‘someday’ to have your pictures done, this time in your life is just as beautiful! Email me if you’d like to reserve a family session!

Waikel Family, thanks so much for continuing to come back to me for your family pictures, it’s the greatest compliment ever! I treasure you and your kids and love watching them grow up to be amazing little humans.

Lots of love!

One of the biggest perks of this career is that I get to know important things happening in my clients’ lives long before other people do! I have the same level of excitement for their life changing events as I do for Christmas morning waiting for my son to come downstairs. As I sat on the cold cement waiting for Kyle and Kortney to arrive at “The Spot” of the proposal, I thought to myself, “She has NO idea that in less than five minutes, her life is going to change forever!” It’s a pretty surreal experience watching an event such as this, documenting her reaction as she realizes she’s being proposed to and of course the tears of joy that inevitably come after she has said ‘YES’!

For the gents reading this, I strongly encourage you to have the proposal photographed. Not only is it so special to have those moments documented, but your new fiance will find the gesture so endearing! If you would like more information about proposal sessions send me a message .

For Kyle and Kortney’s proposal, I started photographing before the actual proposal itself. They decided to go skating at Headwaters Park as a little celebration for their anniversary. I tried my best to stay hidden (especially considering I have purple hair the moment!) Thankfully Kortney was having too much of a good time with her handsome honey to notice me :)

If you’re curious the details that go into planning a proposal session, the most important thing is that we get together before hand to pick the spot. Kyle and I met a few days before the engagement to brain storm what all I would be photographing. It was important to him to get some candid photos of he and Kortney just being ‘them’ prior to him getting on one knee.

Three minutes after this photo was taken, Kortney was an engaged woman!

Kortney said, “OH MY GOSH! WE’RE ENGAGED!”

I don’t know if Kyle was nervous or not, but he couldn’t have been more sweet with Kortney throughout the whole afternoon. I loved getting to see how he would sweetly kiss her forehead while they were ice skating (and not fall!) and this photo below just melted my heart!

Even though it’s the middle of winter, the skyline of Fort Wayne is so beautiful.

Kyle and Kortney, I am so excited to continue documenting your love story throughout this year and especially for your wedding! Thank you for allowing me to see the magic of your proposal.

Much love my friends!
Jess
